The session will explore the utility of both specialized Etext solutions and new, commercially available products designed for use by any student. Participants will be informed of a range of resources from free to fee that will help make the promise of flexible learning materials a reality. Participants will explore ways of supporting student achievement by utilizing flexible digital learning materials and technology-supported methods within a standards aligned system. The session will review web and application-based resources for both Windows and Macintosh platforms and will provide a collection of practical strategies. How to be an Effective Administrator at a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) School Ed.D. Donald Kincaid April 16, 2009 10:15 a.m. This presentation will share information related to Florida.s approach to identifying and teaching leadership skills that can support the successful implementation of PBS within a school. Participants will learn the specific roles and responsibilities of administrators that are essential to PBS implementation. The Six Secrets of Change for Effective Leadership Ph.D Michael Fullan April 15, 2009 9:00 a.m. This session will focus on leadership at the school, district, and state levels with respect to bringing about effective, large-scale reform that raises the bar and closes the gap for all students. Drawing from the leadership literature from successful organizations and from his own work in fostering successful reform in school districts, states and provinces, Dr. Fullan will identify and provide case examples of how leaders draw on ‘six secrets’ of leading change initiatives that get results in student learning. Standards Aligned Systems in Pennsylvania Ed.D. Gerald Zahorchak April 16, 2009 8:30 a.m. Pennsylvania Standards Aligned Systems (SAS) is a collaborative product of research and good practice that identifies six distinct elements which, if utilized together, will provide schools and districts with a common framework for continuous school and district enhancement and improvement. In this session, Dr. Zahorchak will provide information on the history of the Standards Aligned System, information on the six components of SAS, and an update on the continuing development of the system. What Works and Doesn't Work in Implementing School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) in High Schools Ed.D. Donald Kincaid April 16, 2009 1:45 p.m. This presentation will provide specific examples of high schools that have implemented Positive Behavior Support with fidelity. Information will also be shared on specific strategies to address common challenges and assist the audience in applying a problem solving process for unique challenges. Pennsylvania's Brain STEPS Program: Educational Implications of Concussions and Moderate and Severe Brain Injuries That Students in Your Schools and Preschools are Experiencing Brenda Eagan-Brown April 17, 2009 8:30 a.m. This session will focus on the misidentification and under-identification of students with traumatic brain injury in schools. Information will be shared on the educational needs of students following concussions and moderate and severe brain injuries. SLD Eligibility and Eligibility and Response to Intervention: Why This, Why Now, and Why Not? Esq Melinda Baird April 14, 2009 6:00 p.m. This session will highlight RtI and why special educators are concerned about its implementation and their role in the process. In addition, information will be shared on the new criteria for Specific Learning Disability (SLD) eligibility, discrepancy vs. RtI, data-based documentation of the provision of appropriate instruction, and the litigation related to RtI.
